Jakarta, February 29, 2024 – The OCBC Space building owned by PT OCBC NISP Tbk (OCBC), located in BSD Tangerang, has received the EDGE Advanced Green Building certification from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Green Building Council (GBC) Indonesia. The certification ceremony took place on February 6, 2024, following OCBC Space's earlier achievement of EDGE Certified status at the Preliminary stage on July 25, 2022. The implementation of green building principles at OCBC Space has successfully reduced carbon emissions from operations by 1,600 tons of carbon (tCO2), which is equivalent to planting 24.000 trees.
“Sustainability for us at OCBC is not merely an aspiration or a 'nice to have'; rather, we believe that the implementation of ESG will have a positive impact on the future. We continually strive to integrate ESG into our operational lines as an effort to achieve net zero carbon. The EDGE Level 2 or Advanced Green Building certification signifies an achievement for OCBC, demonstrating that we have elevated our standards in terms of energy conservation”, said Filipus H. Suwarno, Head of Operations & Information Technology, OCBC.
By utilizing artificial lighting that integrates daylight sensors and occupancy sensors within the building management system, along with the installation of solar panels and high-performance glass, the OCBC Space building is projected to achieve energy savings of up to 45%. With the implementation of a water recycling system that utilizes wastewater for toilet flushing and plant irrigation, as well as the use of self-processed drinking water, it is anticipated that the OCBC Space building can conserve water by up to 82%. Furthermore, the use of energy-efficient building materials is expected to generate savings of up to 22%.
"Nearly 40% of annual global greenhouse gas emissions come from building operations and construction. Prioritizing resource efficiency within the building environment is crucial in the effort to address climate change. This is one of the primary priorities of the IFC in Indonesia regarding climate,” stated Euan Marshall, IFC Country Manager for Indonesia and Timor-Leste. “We are proud to be a long-term partner of OCBC in supporting various ongoing sustainable initiatives. The EDGE Advanced certification means that OCBC will be able to significantly reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to Indonesia's greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.”
OCBC has consistently engaged employees to actively participate in emission reduction efforts through the EVA RAMLI movement (environment advocate, eco-friendly), which is a zero waste management initiative in daily operational activities. This includes the installation of segregated waste bins, waste management, and the recycling of used plastic and paper.
Iparman Oesman, Organization Secretary of the Green Building Council (GBC) Indonesia said, “The OCBC Space building certification represents a wise step by OCBC, which also serves as an adaptation and mitigation of climate change. We all have a responsibility to curb the average increase in air temperature, as this Earth is what we will bequeath to future generations.”
Filipus added, “Hopefully this certification will inspire all employees, customers, and other OCBC stakeholders to take part in preserving the environment for a better Indonesia and a better earth.”
EDGE is a global green building certification system developed by IFC. To date, EDGE has certified over 2.8 million square meters of building area and more than 19,000 homes in Indonesia, with the potential to reduce 80,000 tons of CO2.
